New required training goes into effect March 21, 2019
In the effort to streamline and target training for UF\Shands\VA researchers/research staff, effective 3/21/19, the only IRB required training will be IRB Training (IRB803), which will be valid for 3 years. This training combines the content of CITI/NIH, HIPAA for Research, and IRB Local training. Every 3 years going forward, you will only need to complete the IRB803 training, which will be updated periodically. On average this effort will shorten IRB required training by 2 hrs! This change does not affect your current IRB training status. You’ll be due to take the new IRB training (IRB803) when your current IRB Local training (IRB801/802) expires (i.e.: 3 years after you took it). If students are planning to do INTERNATIONAL research, students must complete the pre-departure training in the The Practitioner’s Guide to Global Health and complete all forms in the Trip manual for MSRP
*Please note you must plan 6 months ahead for an international project, please start requirements in January to conduct research in June.*

AALAS Courses
All courses are found at the AALAS Learning Library
Required Courses for all animal users EXCEPT rodent users
All training modules for researchers and lab personnel are found in Libraries, under the heading UF Researchers – IACUC Training Modules.
All individuals on IACUC protocols are required to take and pass:
- Working with the IACUC
- The introduction course for species used. There is a course for almost all species. Lab members take the course related to the species they are working on; i.e., if working with cats, must take “Introduction to Cats”.
All individuals conducting surgery (non-rodent) or any procedure in which pain has the potential to be present (Category D or E protocols) must take and pass:
- Pain Management in Laboratory Animals
All individuals conducting surgery on ruminants (regardless of size) are required to take:
- Small Ruminant Anesthesia and Intra-Operative Monitoring
All individuals working with Non-Human Primates are required to take and pass:
- Health Risks and Safety Procedures for Working with Nonhuman Primates
- Introduction to Nonhuman Primates.
Required Courses for all RODENT users

All individuals on IACUC rodent protocols are required to take and pass:
- Working with the IACUC
All rat users are required to take and pass:
- Working with the Laboratory Rat
All mouse users are required to take and pass:
- Working with the Laboratory Mouse
All individuals working with rodents involving any procedure in which pain has the potential to be present (Category D or E protocols) must take and pass:
- Pain Management in Laboratory Animals
- Post-Procedure Care of Mice and Rats in Research: Minimizing Pain and Distress
All individuals participating in rodent survival surgery are required to take and pass:
- Aseptic Technique for Rodent Survival Surgery
All individuals working with mouse breeding colonies, outside of ACS, are required to take and pass:
- Mouse Breeding Colony Management
All individuals breeding genetically engineered mice, outside of ACS, are ALSO required to take and pass:
- Genetically Engineered Mice: Approaches for Evaluating the Phenotype
- Genetically Engineered Mice: Overview of Transgenesis and Conditional Control
If ACS is doing the breeding these three breeding courses do not need to be taken
